Concerning this difference no statistics are available, and it is impossible to say whether this difference will be in favour of the Chinese Article or against it.
The foregoing information furnishes a sufficient answer to the questions raised in paragraph 4 of His Excellency G. Bowen's despatch. As the Chinese Cost are prepared to levy an Excise duty upon spirits manufactured in the country on the same scale as the import duties on Chinese spirit, and it is their intention to levy a proportionate additional duty on all imported Spirits which exceed in alcoholic strength the spirits manufactured in the country.
